Dictionary Definition of Roulette
Roulette Definition
The Compact Oxford English Dictionary defines 'roulette' as "a gambling game in which a ball is dropped onto a revolving wheel with numbered compartments, the players betting on the number at which the ball comes to rest". The name of the game 'Roulette' means 'little wheel' in French.
Roulette Roots
As with many other games, the exact history of Roulette is not as precise as one may like. The earliest Roulette game is believed to have been invented by French mathematician, Blaise Pascal, during the seventeenth century. In the mid nineteenth century, it appears that this game was adapted by Francois and Louis Blanc and a zero was added for the benefit of the casino. The game of Roulette rolled its way into the United States during the nineteenth century, where a double zero was added in order to increase the house odds even further. The American version of Roulette hosts 38 separate compartments, compared to 37 sections in the European Roulette game. The American Roulette wheel shows the numbers 1 to 36 plus single- and double-zero slots, while the Europeans settle for a single zero section on their roulette wheel.
Online Roulette History
Once casinos were introduced to the Internet as an online option in the mid 1990's, the game of roulette quickly became popular as an online form of entertainment. The creators of the online roulette software endeavored to provide a roulette game with vivid and attractive graphics and even realistic sound effects. Now, people can play roulette for real money online in the comfort and convenience of their homes.
Roulette Success is not History!
No matter what the details of Roulette history are, the game has proved itself to be an exciting and successful form of entertainment. The history of Roulette and its popular standing in today's casino arena suggest that land-based roulette and online roulette will continue to entertain a large number of people around the globe for many years to come.
